Man,
I remember, growing up, watching game shows on TV. The contestants would be called out of the audience or picked in advance for the chance to win some extraordinary prize that they’d scarcely be able to afford on their own. I remember watching some jump for joy after winning the Grand Prize, a car or boat or even a trip around the world. Then there were the people who lost and were subsequently awarded the “consolation prize” which was usually something like a year’s supply of rice-a-roni, the San Francisco treat. As if eating rice everyday could make up for missing out on a free trip to around the world. But it dawned on me one day... that’s how we treat Jesus most days, like rice-roni. Like He’s not what we really wanted, but He comes in handy when we’re really hungry or just really in need. Doesn’t that sound kind of crazy? How do we get to the point of placing the Savior of our souls in the same category as rice? -like He’s not what we want either, but at least we got something -Jesus. Is He just our consolation prize or who we truly seek after?
